[edit] Technical Introduction to using WiL
Basic user's introduction to using WiL:
Based on Tom's talk Fri June 20/2008
[edit] Sign-up & Booking
To begin using WAN-in-Lab via the WiL website, users need to:
Sign-up, register an account or log-in your account
and then make a booking
When a benchmark test is scheduled from <http://wil-ns.cs.caltech.edu/benchmark>, a booking is automatically made.
[edit] Booking mechanisms
Bookings are recorded in the WiL database.
A cron job run as the unprivileged WAN-in-Lab user on WiL-NS every minute. Five minutes before a booking is due to start, it changes project to the specified project, rebooting servers if necessary and reconfiguring the routers and MEMS switch.
Two hours after a booking is finished, if there are no further bookings for two hours, servers 1 to 8 are turned off, using the remote power switches. (Currently, this is disabled since servers do not turn on again reliably. Eventually, it will also extend to Disk1-Disk4.) This both saves power and encourages users to make bookings rather than just using WiL; which facilitates sharing.
Please note in 2008, bookings for entire WiL is preferred.
