[edit] Hardware doesn't work
- For servers, check that the Power Distribution Unit outlet is turned on.
- If a new line card doesn't work, check that it has enough memory. The OSM-1OC48-POS cards need at least 128M.
[edit] Website and Server down
- When the website http://wil.cs.caltech.edu goes down, reset the server WiL-FS as described on reboot page.
- When the website http://netlab.caltech.edu
/cs/research/networks/netlab/hanas_site/
goes down,
contact help at cs caltech dot edu
or for version control fowllow the links on

[edit] Cooling system interruptions
If the Lab cooling system goes down, take the following precautions:
- turn almost everything off, including ONSs and routers
- except leave on 5 machines, WiL-NS, the terminal server (WiL-DELL2) and switches
When cooling is restored, follow the procedure below
[edit] printk() is very slow
If kernel functions that print a lot of debugging information are going very slowly, and the kernel is running on a machine where the console is redirected to a serial port (e.g., for the console server), see console server#Caveats
[edit] New kernel doesn't boot
- Use the console server to see the boot messages, without having to go into the lab
- If the problem is DHCP or NFS
- check /var/log/messages on wil-ns, and run tcpdump on wil-ns
- Look for icmp packets, like "unreachable".
- check that the mount daemon is working on WiL-NS
